Opioid Induced Euphoria (OIE)
Emergency Department feasibility study measuring opioid induced euphoria in adolescents
The purpose of this study is to determine the feasibility of measuring opioid induced euphoria (OIE) in the Emergency Department before and after opioid treatment for acute pain.
The project explores why some adolescents receiving opioids for acute pain may face higher risks for subsequent misuse. Researchers are replicating FDA pharmaceutical procedures using a contemporary questionnaire developed and validated with teenagers.
Prior FDA studies only involved individuals with opioid use disorder history. Correlation patterns between self-report measures, pupillometry, and serum opioid levels may differ in teenagers versus adults with substance use disorder. Previous measurement tools were not designed for adolescent comprehension.
